Die Universit\u00e4t Mannheim erh\u00e4lt eine F\u00f6rderung von \u00fcber 75.000 Euro f\u00fcr das Projekt \u201eVerfolgungs\u00adbedingt entzogenes Kulturgut im Bestand der Universit\u00e4ts\u00adbibliothek Mannheim\u201c. Ziel des Projekts ist es, NS-Raubgut aus den historischen Buchbest\u00e4nden der Universit\u00e4ts\u00adbibliothek zu erfassen, sichtbar zu machen und sofern m\u00f6glich zur\u00fcckzugeben.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mit der Macht\u00fcbernahme der NSDAP im Jahr 1933 begannen die Nationalsozialisten unliebsame Organisationen und Privatpersonen, insbesondere j\u00fcdische B\u00fcrger*innen, nach und nach ihrer Rechte zu berauben. Im Zuge der Verfolgung und Vernichtung von Menschen bereicherte sich der NS-Staat auch an deren Eigentum \u2013 einschlie\u00dflich ihren B\u00fcchern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bereits Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts entstand in Mannheim eine \u00f6ffentliche Bibliothek, die Teile der in der Kurpfalz verbliebenen Hofbibliothek der Wittelsbacher mit Schenkungen aus Privat- und Vereinsbibliotheken vereinte. Aus diesem Bestand ging 1921 die 70.000 B\u00e4nde umfassende St\u00e4dtische Schlossb\u00fccherei hervor, die im Bibliothekssaal des Mannheimer Schlosses untergebracht war. Im Jahr 1954 wurde dieser \u00f6ffentliche Bestand in die Wissenschaft\u00adliche Stadtbibliothek \u00fcberf\u00fchrt und gelangte 1971 durch eine Schenkung in den Besitz der Universit\u00e4ts\u00adbibliothek Mannheim. Zum Zeitpunkt dieser Schenkung war der Bestand der Wissenschaft\u00adlichen Stadtbibliothek auf etwa 240.000 Titel angewachsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Im nun startenden Projekt untersucht die Universit\u00e4ts\u00adbibliothek Mannheim systematisch die Best\u00e4nde der St\u00e4dtischen Schlossb\u00fccherei nach Kulturgut, das j\u00fcdischen Mitb\u00fcrger*innen w\u00e4hrend der NS-Zeit entzogen wurde. Die Verdachtsf\u00e4lle sollen erfasst, sichtbar gemacht und m\u00f6glichst zur\u00fcckgegeben werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The University of Mannheim will receive funding of more than 75,000 euros for the project on cultural property that has been seized as a result of persecution in the collection of Mannheim University Library (\u201cVerfolgungsbedingt entzogenes Kulturgut im Bestand der Universit\u00e4tsbibliothek Mannheim\u201c). The aim of the project is to record Nazi-looted property included in the historical book collections of the library, to make it visible and return it, if possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When they seized power in 1933, the National Socialists began to deprive disagreeable organizations and private individuals, in particular Jewish citizens, of their rights. The Nazi state also took the property of the people they persecuted and murdered, including their books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Mannheim, a public library was established as early as the end of the 19th century. The library combined parts of the Wittelsbach court library that had remained in the Electoral Palatinate and donations from private libraries and libraries of associations. In 1921, this collection was the basis for the St\u00e4dtische Schlossb\u00fccherei in the Bibliotheksaal of the Schloss in Mannheim, which housed 70,000 volumes. In 1954, this public collection was transferred to the Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek and in 1971, it was donated to the Mannheim University Library. At the time of this donation, the collection of the Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek amounted to about 240,000 volumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the project that is now starting, the Mannheim University Library is systematically analyzing the collection of the St\u00e4dtischen Schlossb\u00fccherei for cultural property confiscated from Jewish citizens during the Nazi era. Suspected cases should be recorded, made visible and, if possible, returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
